The Bundesliga continues with two more high-quality fixtures in another rare midweek round of fixtures in Germany. There are vital points in the battle for a top-four finish, while Bayern Munich will also be looking to wrap up their eighth consecutive title.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Wolfsburg
The most enticing fixture of this round of fixtures will see Wolfsburg travel to Borussia Monchengladbach. Both sides still have hopes of finishing the season with European football. Monchengladbach are hoping for a Champions League finish, while Wolfsburg have their sights set on a finish in the Europa League spots.
Monchengladbach’s fate is now out of their hands after they handed the advantage to Bayer Leverkusen in the last round of fixtures. Leverkusen’s draw coupled with defeat for Monchengladbach means that Bayer now have a one-point advantage to protect with three games remaining of the season. Monchengladbach will come into this fixture having lost their last two, and a third defeat could see them having a huge difference to make up. They were unfortunate in their last league game, as they deserved to take a point away from the Allianz Arena. However, Leon Goretzka’s late goal meant that it was disappointment for Monchengladbach.
Wolfsburg have been a tough side to beat since the action resumed as they have been beaten just twice. Their best performance since the restart came against Bayer Leverkusen as they shocked Europe by running out 4-1 winners. They currently have a three-point lead over Hoffenheim in the battle for sixth, and a win in this fixture could be crucial in the fight. They would have been disappointed with their last outing, as they were held 2-2 despite racing into a 2-0 lead. Wout Weghorst scored a first-half brace for Wolfsburg, but Freiburg levelled the scores after goals from Lucas Holer and Roland Sallai.
The recent meetings between the two sides make for interesting reading, as Wolfsburg are unbeaten in three. They won the match earlier in the season 2-1. However, the preference would be for an entertaining score draw.
Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich are on the edge of glory, as they need just three more points from their remaining three games to win the Bundesliga title for the eighth time in a row. This should be the game where they are crowned, as they have won the last 18 Bundesliga meetings against Werder Bremen.
Bayern comes into this fixture in excellent form having won all their games since the restart. They have only dropped two points in 2020, and have scored 11 goals in their previous three matches. Their last two victories have come against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach, which shows that they still aren’t taking their foot off the accelerator. Their most recent win was against Monchengladbach, as they won 2-1 despite playing without Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski. Joshua Zirkzee opened the scoring for the Bavarians before they were pulled back by Monchengladbach after an own goal by Benjamin Pavard. However, Bayern weren’t to be denied and secured all three points as Leon Goretzka scored with four minutes remaining.
Werder Bremen enjoyed a successful weekend, as their victory over Paderborn means that they are now level on points with Fortuna Dusseldorf. The best news of all for Werder would have been the four-goal advantage that they secured through the 5-1 win, which means that the difference between Fortuna and Werder is now just one goal. Davy Klaassen scored a brace in that win, while Maximillian Eggestein, Niclas Fullkrug and Yuya Osako were also on the scoresheet.
This will be a much more challenging game for Werder, and their main target will be trying to keep the scoreline down as much as possible. Gamblers will be betting on a win for Bayern, as the 2-0 scoreline could be the most lucrative bet.
